Scottish punter Jamie Gillan has been named AFC Special Teams Player of the Week Following an Amazing display for the Cleveland Browns against the New York Jets.
Nicknamed”The Hammer”, Inverness-born Gillan landed five punts inside the 20-yard lineup in the Browns’ 23-3 win also contributes the complete NFL in that category with eight in only two matches this season.
His six punts against the Jets travelled a total of 231 yards and one of them managed to be returned – for a total of five metres.
Gillan, that went to college wasn’t chosen in the 2019 NFL Draft, but had been picked up from the Browns as a free agent and named after an impressive preseason.
In Cleveland’s second preseason game, punt an incredible 74 yards, one was booted by Gillan against the Indianapolis Colts.
He’s the first Browns punter to win the award since Spencer Lanning in 2013.
Although Houston Texans linebacker Whitney Mercilus was named Defensive Player of the week, AFC Offensive Player of the Week honours moved to Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes.
In the NFC, Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson chose the award, defensive honours were won by Shaquil Barrett of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to get a screen that was three-sack and Chicago Bears kicker Eddy Pineiro won the special teams award for his game-winning 53-yard field goal.
